How did they shoot the photo albums scene from the Notebook?

at the end of the Notebook, they show Noah (played by James Garner)
looking through old photo albums of him and Allie (played by Gena
Rowlands). The pictures clearly depict the two actors when they were
young, but I looked it up, and the two actors were never married or
together. How did they make the pictures so accurate towards the real
actors? Did they photoshop pictures of the two of them together?
